What Is the Future of Retail Facilities Management?

February 8, 2017

Retail facilities management is evolving in the wake of the Internet of Things (IoT). This technology goes beyond devices built into buildings or homes. For example, even drones and the information they collect are seen as part of the IoT, and if drones are deployed automatically, the connection to the IoT is inherent. For retail facilities management, the impact of automated systems, including energy management, will continue to grow in the future in these ways.

More Companies Will Demand More Oversight.

Major companies around the country, ranging from 7-Eleven to Walmart, have plans to expand operations to thousands of new locations within the next few years. Consequently, the level of oversight needed to manage each building represents a major burden on the industry, but the retail facilities management systems are getting a make-over through the IoT. These companies will utilize automation and connected devices to manage everyday operations and keep facilities within regulations and quality-assurance standards.

Retail Facilities Management Regulation Is Coming.

While the government has yet to impose regulations on the necessity to use the IoT to track, manage and report status to oversight agencies, regulations are inevitable. The growing number of devices and energy-saving benefits of retail facilities management systems are creating real-world benefits, and since the government is in the business of cutting costs where possible and protecting the environment, regulating retail facilities management using the IoT will become a common practice in the future.

It is reasonable to assume government mandates may soon require the use of smart building technologies in all retail facilities management operations.

Diversity Will Encourage Use of Smart Systems.

In conjunction with expanding a number of retail establishments, the differences in construction and design will become evident as more people turn to local, unique shopping venues. Thus, the logistics of retail facilities management will become impractical on the one-person basis. In other words, information regarding retail facilities management will need to be collected, analyzed and applied seamlessly, especially when companies merge and being managing operations that were not previously included in a company’s given energy and facilities management system.

Automation Will Replace Manual Retail Facilities Management Processes.

Automation is the new gold standard in retail facilities management. Automation immediately cuts labor costs, reduces risk and improves operational efficiency. Robotics may be applied to complete repairs in dangerous locations, such as high-voltage areas, or wireless controls will be used to perform building inspections via drones, explains Steven Lambert of Facility Executive. Meanwhile, 3D printing will enable faster repairs and additional connection with other devices.

What Does It Mean?

The impact of the IoT in retail facilities management will expand exponentially as new technologies take the place of traditional workers., The future of retail facilities management operations is connected, automated and efficient. Take action today by implementing an efficient facilities management system including energy management system that adapts and reduces costs, before your company falls victim to your competitors.
